About the Scheme
Tradition and continuity are just two of the values that characterise the relationship between Freemasonry and universities. It was more than 200 years ago that the first university Lodge – Apollo University Lodge – was founded at Oxford in 1818.
Isaac Newton University Lodge soon followed here in Cambridge in 1861 and since then many thousands of young men have been introduced to Freemasonry through these two Lodges.
There are now 87 Lodges and seven Chapters pursuing a similar, yet distinct, course across England and Wales, where towns and cities have universities.
Who can join
The Universities Scheme welcomes new members and those wishing to become Freemasons, who are undergraduates, postgraduates, senior members of the university and alumni, and any students from Further Education, ranging in age from 18 upwards.
All under-25s also benefit from the decision by Grand Lodge to halve their fees in order to make Freemasonry accessible to as wide an audience as possible.
Cambridheshire University Scheme Lodges
In this Province, we have three Lodges that are established members of the Scheme and have many graduate and undergraduate members — not only from the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University but from other local universities and, indeed, other universities from around the world.
Isaac Newton University Lodge No. 859 — Isaac Newton University Lodge will only accept matriculated members of Cambridge University.
Alma Mater Lodge No. 1492 — Alma Mater Lodge admits only graduates and postgraduates of recognised Universities.
Cantabrigia Lodge No. 3532 — Cantabrigia Lodge is closely linked with the Anglia Ruskin University and also accepts members without a university degree.
